It's not an advert as I'm not trying to sell anything[8-)]?

But at least scan will give you a clue what the fault may be ant than you can investigate what is going on.

Red4 months ago

Wouldnt be that mate, thats normal. Its the auxilary belt tensioner and its spring loaded.

Matchmaker14 months ago

wouldn't be something as simple as the belt slipping would it

Hi guys. Just noticed while driving earlier that the time when it beeps the headlights also dimmed. I found that I could just rev the engine while standing and this confirmed it. Taking this into consideration, does this definitely mean the alternator is a gonner?

Matchmaker14 months ago

Cheers mate, glad to see the s3 back on the road :) lets hope you got some good luck on the way after all your bad luck lately !!

R2_Amazeballs4 months ago

As I have repeated more times than there are stars in the universe,a 30 second check with a multimeter will tell me (or anyone else) if it's the battery or the alternator.I can do this test up to a dozen times a day when we're busy at work, and so far it hasn't let me down.

Mary4 months ago

Nothing to do with the lights, the wipers was probably just low voltage so not enough torque to the motor.Nothing to do with when you started the car, that's just when you first noticed it.

Porker4 months ago

If you have a read of my guide and do the full load test and let us know the results, this is MUCH more important than just letting it idle with no load on it.

Matchmaker14 months ago

That's me based about 300 miles to the south of you.

Matchmaker14 months ago

nah I bought it privately cheers for all your help :)

my alternator bearing is dying, ripping it out and stripping it later this week:)

Fionas_Boy4 months ago

i checked on ebay and all the 120 amp they say that are for 1.8T, 2.8 V6 4 motion and R32...but they all come without the pulley

Watergirl4 months ago

if the symptoms persist, try revving the car past 2500k rpm. my car wasnt charging at idle, but did charge on it second stage(2500 rpm and above)

Bri19874 months ago

In the day this sh*t happened the lights were off. Now I remember that the windscreen wipers were going a little shaky but I thought it`s just me. So whatever happened, it was when I started the car that day, right?

MDG Ltd4 months ago

I'm not writing out for the kerzillionth time why a scan is a waste of time for a fault like this,it's all explained why in that link[brick].

Red4 months ago

Like I said, may not help you at all, but it won't cost anything (other than some carb cleaner) to check it out, and it can only be a good thing to clean it up anyway.

The entire starting and charging system should be inspected before replacing the alternator to eliminate other problems that may be affecting the alternator's performance. For instance, a weak battery and/or battery cables will result in a failed alternator test.

Col Minessota4 months ago

You need to read my guide and do what it says to also confirm if it's charging or not,we need to know the engine off voltage, engine running voltage and most importantly the full load voltage.

Mary4 months ago

or a link where I can buy them all?

Mary4 months ago

a simple volt meter test will tell you if it is the battery or the alternator.

petHead4 months ago

no I haven't done that yet will give it a go when i get a chance and let You no cheers :)

Pete_W4 months ago

The battery warning light (a bit of a misnomer as it can't actually warn you of problems with the battery, only with the alternator) can only come on at one time, which is when the alternator is producing less voltage than is stored in the battery.Only two things can really cause this to happen, one on some engines if it drops below the normal idle speed and on any from a bad earth.

Pete_W4 months ago

This is a mark 4 Golf which still uses technology pioneered by George Stephenson for his famous Rocket locomotive[:DD].They don't have the ability to switch anything off one by one or in any other sequence,if he gets a warning light it's nothing more than an old fashioned light bulb connected to the field coils of the alternator that lights up when the alternator puts out less voltage than is stored in the battery.

Watergirl4 months ago

On another note,  if you cold start your car, let it idle,  turn on some of the electrics (heated rear window,  fans, heated seats),   does the engine unnaturally start to increase idle speed to something like 1200-1500rpm?

Gary19964 months ago

Olsen You had the alternator light ON in the dashboard?

Red4 months ago

Saturday evening done a bit of research and read that it could be my battery, so Sunday I done a test on the battery and was coming out at 14.5 volts.. Which I belive is a good charge rate??

MDG Ltd4 months ago

Scan will be good idea coz if you have any warning light on it should tell you what is going on. And i cant remmember if i had alternator light on.

petHead4 months ago

Almost certainly means your alternator hasn't got long to live.Shame you don't want to take it to the one person qualified to fix it for you.

Volkswagen R32 alternator fault

I will get a new one, but can you tell what is the problem?

Matchmaker14 months ago

14.7 is too high, the problem is it may only be breaking down under load when it's hot and doing the test when cold won't show the fault.

R2_Amazeballs4 months ago

wouldn't bother about it too much as i had the same problem a couple of times happen to me when i brought my car which was year and half ago and until recently last month i changed the alternator to a high output one but the old one was still working fine and was charging two batteries aswel like normal.

Gary19964 months ago

Also, should I get an eror if I scan with vagcom?

MechExp4 months ago

Also got the batery box out(the one with the fuses on top of the batery) and the 1st cable -the only black one. Seems to have melted a little bit of the plastic around the screw where it meets the + from the batery.

MDG Ltd4 months ago

A failing alternator can cause problems starting the vehicle and may result in a repeated need to jump start the vehicle.

MDG Ltd4 months ago

Put VAG-COM away as it won't tell you diddly squat for stuff like this and get one of these out instead......

Red4 months ago

My mates TT had at least 5 DTCs all caused when his alternator died (The DTCs meant the DSG gearbox wouldn't s elect gears and the engine would not rev beyond 2500rpm).

petHead4 months ago

In the end a new alternator and battery had to be fitted. I;ll dig out the receipt to give you an idea of how much it cost.

Red4 months ago

I know it's not always conveniant, but you need to take a voltage reading next time the light comes on if possible?
