But as has been the problem with other Honda models, the CR-Z uses two separate voice command systems, with two sets of buttons, one for navigation and other car functions, and one for the phone system. The buttons pile on each other between the left spokes of the steering wheel.

Switching between the two settinsg really works on my daily grind into the office. The Economy setting is ideal for creeping silently through the villages and towns that punctuate my route, while Sport is a pretty effective tool for shortening the long and snaking open roads that link them.

10.) Under normal operating conditions, "the battery gives off explosive hydrogen gas." I kid you not. That's a direct quote taken from the manual. However, in Honda's defense, I know many things that give off a flammable gas and I have never seen him explode or catch on fire... unintentionally.

Gary19964 months ago

But the CR-Z relies on Honda's Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) gas-electric hybrid system, which has never been particularly efficient and suffers from very rough driving characteristics. Looking at fuel economy and power output numbers, Honda's hybrid system offers little advantage over a high-revving, low-displacement pure gas engine.

The 2011 Honda CR-Z is the only two-seat hybrid in the market today and the only hybrid available with a six-speed manual transmission. And while there isn't a specific class for sporty hybrids, the CR-Z loosely competes with a diverse group of cars that ranges from the sporty Mini Cooper to the mileage-maxing Toyota Prius.

Economy returned 54.22mpg – good enough for a theoretical (if slow) 475-mile range from the 40-litre tank. Flicking over to Sport and keeping the rev counter needle nudging the redline as often as possible returned 40.1mpg. Sure that’s a hefty 35% drop in economy, but given the engaging level of driver entertainment dished up in Sport, 40mpg stills seems relatively good value.

For Honda, this is a period where the recent past misses outnumbered the hits. In the previous year Honda unveiled by best minivan of all time, the Honda Odyssey (review), but that was preceded by the CR-Z and the offbeat, crossover-ish Accord Crosstour (review). Better times may lie ahead. Big brother Acura is getting away from the in-your-face grille shield with the excellent Acura TSX wagon (review) and the next-generation Honda Civic is getting good vibes even in advance of its spring debut.

4.) The Honda CR-Z's electric assist motor will last you as long as your battery has enough charge in it, which is about three hard accelerations. In fact, the Honda CR-Z service manual recommends that the technician rev the engine until the battery gauge is midway before releasing it back to the customer. It's my guess that they don't want to have the owner of the car wondering where all the umpht went.

I’m sticking with a Japanese car and I’m sticking with the coupé format but Honda’s CR-Z is a very different bento of sashimi. Out goes a thunderous 317bhp 3.7-litre V6 and incomes a dinky 1.5-litre petrol backed up a high-tech electric engine for a combined heady total of 124bhp.

Honda included a USB pigtail, sticking out of a compartment under the head unit. Along with USB drives, that pigtail works with an iPod. The iPod integration works well, and most people buying a CR-Z would probably rely on it or the XM satellite radio instead of CDs.

Price – $20,095 (CR-Z, including $750 shipping) to $24,105 (CR-Z EX with Navigation and options) to estimated  $25,000 (adding satellite radio, auto-dimming inside mirror)

My main gripe is the ride quality – it’s horribly hard, brittle and underdamped, transmitting every intrusion into the cabin and making me wince over bumps and creases that I never knew existed.

Col Minessota4 months ago

I’ve driven quite a few hybrids over the years – the first being the initial generation of the now ubiquitous Toyota Prius in 1997 – and there’s been a huge leap in powertrain software sophistication since then. If you peeled off the CR-Z’s hybrid badging and handed the keys over to an unsuspecting driver, there would be little in the way the Honda, stops, starts and steers to indicate the advanced gubbins that sit beneath the bonnet and luggage compartment.

Switch to Sport and the Honda snaps into full-on tail-up mode, keen to catapult itself along straights and scythe through corners. Throttle response becomes incredibly sharp, the electric engine responds immediately to inputs, the cabin is filled with a red glow from the instruments and the little Honda feels far fleeter than its on-paper stats would suggest.

Fionas_Boy4 months ago

The stop-start system is also incredibly fast and intuitive. I’ve only been caught out once or twice in heavy traffic, when I didn’t dip the clutch in deep enough when selecting first gear to activate engine-start-up. The rest of time it works so silently and unobtrusively, I barely notice it.

Corrie19994 months ago

Call it a "two-door Insight" or a "next-gen CRX," but, whatever crafty name anyone might come up with for the CR-Z, it's safe to say that it's definitely different. The CR-Z was designed with a "one-motion wedge" concept in mind, which means that the aerodynamic flow of the body lines extends seamlessly from the front of the car to the back, bookended by a trapezoidal grille up front and half-glass hatch in the rear.

MechExp4 months ago

The Honda CR-Z Models The base Honda CR-Z runs $20,995 with shipping, the CR-Z EX with xenon headlamps and better audio runs $21,655, and the CR-Z EX with navigation runs $23,455. Add $650 for the CVT (automatic) transmission. Other than five paint colors, there are no other factory options. The exterior color determines the seat color. From the dealer you order the overpriced satellite radio and an auto-dimming mirror plus the usual carpet mats and door edge protectors.

Honda CR-Z speaker fault

Honda’s voice interface requires you to use separate buttons for navigation (lots of control over navi) and audio (basic control) on the one hand, and for phone control on the other. To access the phone button, you have to reach back in the lower left corner behind the steering wheel. It’s a bit awkward.

Pete_W4 months ago

The rear seats are a joke – it’s a pity there’s no option to turn the useless back pew into a locker – but the passenger compartment feels spacious and airy, helped by the fixed glass sunroof. The front seats look more comfortable than they are because the base cannot be tilt adjusted, which means there’s not insufficient under-thigh support. Sounds trivial but longer trips result in aching legs.

Just about every car on the road these days features a factory stereo. To help you find compatible aftermarket replacements, we've disassembled the dashes and door panels of tens of thousands of vehicles, measured the spaces where these factory stereos and speakers fit, and loaded our findings into our massive fit database. Our system then compares these measurements to the dimensions of a given receiver or speaker to determine of the product will fit in the factory location.

There’s no discernable jerking as the electric engine drops in and out of play and no heavy-handed braking under regeneration. Just smoothly consistent responses from the (poorly spaced, it must be said) brake and throttle pedals.

There’s a cracking corner on my daily trek to work.  At the end of a long straight, it’s a tight uphill lefthander with plenty of camber. Approach it timidly and your speed will die half way through the bend as gravity kicks in. Go in too fast and understeer will scrub off most of your speed – and your front tyres.

Still, you can tailor your driving and the car’s response by pushing the Sport-Norm-Eco buttons. Pressing Eco lowers throttle response; Sport is more responsive, at the cost of some fuel economy. Unlike on $75,000 European cars, the Eco (or Comfort) and Sport settings have no effect on suspension tuning since the CR-X has a purely mechanical suspension.

The audio system on the CR-Z EX is fine, give or take the interface. You have a decent amount of music choices. Satellite radio is a dealer-install option only, at $310 for the module plus installation, or $400-$500 total. Honda could have integrated it into the radio head unit for a few dollars, but didn’t.

6.) After an accident (or sudden stop), you will need to replace the seat belt tensioners in your Honda CR-Z. You see, the seatbelts have a safety feature that removes any slack in the event of an abrupt stop (or crash). It is a use once thing. Sort of like a condom. You could possibly use it again, but it won't operate as designed and she may end up pregnant. I'd order a paternity test, but that's another story. Stop calling me, "daddy."
