Model has stupid problem with blocked washers. radio has interference. syncro crunches a bit from 3rd to 4th when first used in cold weather on first change up. Cheap for a bmw but wouldn't want a puncture or to replace the expensive tyres!

The control screen (for radio, telephone etc) does not work if you restart the car within 10 minutes of having turned the car off

The 1 Series has been in production for nine years, so there are plenty of used examples out there. Heres a list of the most common problems owners have experienced.

FordOwner4 months ago

nice in the summer but shocking and too light in the winter.rear wheel drive no good in snow

Col Minessota4 months ago

Can't fault it in the time I've had it it's not put a foot (wheel?) wrong! It's a company car, fuel consumption's the only bill I have to worry about and it's not too bad.

Corrie19994 months ago

Car is good - Think the internal build quality could be improved - in particular around the door pillars where it meets the dashboard.

MDG Ltd4 months ago

Some of the problems stem from the previous user of the car.

Corrie19994 months ago

Very reliable. Fuel consumption falls short of manufacturers figures.

Porker4 months ago

We had a manager leave and I ended up with the car. The 1 series had such good reports I was sure it would be a good car. Nothing but niggles electric windows stopped working last week in the snow, so did the mirror dip this started to work again yesterday.

BMW 1 Series axle problem (2004-2011 cars)Some 1 Series cars built between May and September 2004 had issues with their rear axles. The control arm may not have been fitted as intended, and as a result, the connections on the control arms could come loose. Unacceptable lateral forces could therefore be applied to the securing bolts and the exact alignment of the wheels could no longer be guaranteed.

Has never let me down. (oh dear bet that's torn it!). As a skilled mechanic I do my own servicing. bmw dealers are far too dear. parts are easily available and straightforwrd to fit. for a 2litre engine fuel consumption is excellent and even better on the later models.

Matchmaker14 months ago

Generally reliable but needed all ignition coils replacing under warranty as well as an engine sensor. Very economical for a 2.0 petrol engine, low servicing costs but only average road tax and insurance costs. Just the right amount of power for everyday road use.

Let me down on holiday this year! Petrol is so dear.

No problems so far. Very good for a 177 bhp car.

Corrie19994 months ago

48000 miles and nothing has gone wrong. It's a company car so I don't pay the bills. but nothing has gone wrong.

Corrie19994 months ago

No faults since ownership. Tyre consumption could be better.

A very good package of driving pleasure, performance, economy, green credentials, build quality and all backed by an excellent level of BMW service

Bri19874 months ago

It has never let me down. Acceptable except for rising cost of fuel which is hardly the vehicles fault.

BMW 1 Series starter motor fault

It has been reliable since I have had it. Fuel consuption is good particularly on the motorway for an automatic.

Watergirl4 months ago

No problems - new car. Good - doesnt get anywhere near the claimed mpg figures just like all cars.

Franchise dealerships operate under a dealer agreement with a vehicle manufacturer. This repair price has been calculated using official BMW repair times, genuine parts prices and regional franchise dealer labour rates.

BMW was wise to capitalise on the small family hatch segment, because the 1 Series' combination of premium feel and handling dynamics won many fans and sales.

Col Minessota4 months ago

Overall I like the car, just dissappointed with teh performance, (1.6 petrol) and ride quality. Had two faults fixed under warrenty so far, wasn't expecting any with a BMW.

Pete_W4 months ago

Excellent car (not great in snow) fun to drive, great build quality. one of the best cars I have evedr owned!

Porker4 months ago

Brilliant but small car - but no surprises there. Disappointed by the stock levels (or lack of) of run flat tyres in the area when I had a puncture but this isn't BMW's fault.

Pete_W4 months ago

Not owned long enough - however previous bmw120d was very reliable

Mary4 months ago

It is reliable but very bad in snow being a rear wheel drive. Service charges are high at dealer ship they rip you off but not very costly if one goes to a reliable service garage, and the parts have to be replaced on which ever parts gets needs replacing and are more or less same as the other makes.

Watergirl4 months ago

Great car with no faults to date. Not as good on fuel as surgested by bmw.

Gary19964 months ago

BMW 1 Series braking problem (2004-2011 cars)There was a problem with the brakes on some 1 Series built during March 2006. A fault in the gassing system on the brake servo sealing-ring could lead to the ring being subject to change. The seal could be pressed into the brake servo housing and cause a leak and a loss of braking assistance.

Bough as ex demo in march 2007 after it was registered in sept 2006. had no reliability issues. nothing has failed. 6 speed gear box. cruises well. I only use the car for leisure trips and holidays 3 times a year. serviced at bmw main dealership every 2 years due to low annual mileage. satisfied with this arrangement.

BMW 1 Series airbag problem (2004-2011 cars)A number of cars built between May and July 2008 had airbag problems. Due to the faulty crimping of the component parts of the airbag wiring harness and seatbelt tensioner, both may not trigger in the event of an accident.

Matchmaker14 months ago

BMW 1 Series power steering problem (2004-2011 cars)Some cars built between June 2007 and December 2011 had issues with their power steering systems. A component within the integrated control module was not to specification and could fail. If this happens the EPS dashboard light will illuminate. Directional control will be maintained, albeit with additional driver input.

R2_Amazeballs4 months ago

Never had a problem (yet). Fuel good, bmw parts cost a lot.
