I would not use vermiculight as a substrate, they can ingest smaller chunks and become impacted. Check out our Housing section for safer options.

1. CRESTED GECKO DIET ONLY: The easiest and most convenient method of feeding Crested Geckos is to use the powdered CRESTED GECKO DIET. These diets have been formulated to contain all of the essential fats, proteins, minerals, and vitamins that cresteds need. Crested geckos can be maintained on this diet alone however for optimum condition and health we recommend also feeding dusted and gut loaded insects once or twice per week.

Catching your own feeder insects from outside is not recommended; outside bugs may have parasites, or they could have walked through or eaten insecticides or other chemicals which could potentially poison your gecko. Purchase your feeders from a trusted source, or raise your own from a trusted source's stock.

The tank has a couple of small live plants. A small waterfall is on the one side and about a quarter of the visible floor space has a water area. The water reservoir actually extends the entirety of the bottom of the tank up to about 1.5-2 inches (with hydroballs).

It is currently unknown whether heat plays a role in determining the sex of the embryo, as it can with other gecko species.

Long believed extinct, the species was rediscovered in 1994 after a tropical storm.[2] It is currently being assessed for CITES protection and vulnerable status.[7] The biggest single threat to the wild population appears to be the introduction of the little fire ant (Wassmania auropunctata) to New Caledonia.[4] The ants prey on the geckos, stinging and attacking in great numbers, and they also compete with the geckos for food by preying on arthropods.

My crested gecko has all of the sudden got a dark patch and I do not know the reason I’m very worried please reply.

I just got a six month old female crestie at a local reptile show. She has been eating and seems to be doing fine. However, I saw her swiping her head back and forth and eating the substrate(coco husk) while doing it. Is this normal?

Hi Tori! I’m glad you like C.T.!

Crested Geckos store calcium in the roof of the mouth in what are called endolymphatic sacs. You can check these reserves from time to time to monitor the storage level of calcium. This is particularly important for breeding female geckos and should be done periodically regardless of your feeding practices.

If you have a pair or group that is not breeding you should take a look at the key factors such as temperatures, nutrition, cage space, age of the animals, etc.

Hi, Our male eyelash crested gecko is a two years old & healthy. We regularly leave him for two days at a time. We would like to be able to go away up to five days. How can we safely keep him moist without a fogging or misting device?

Essentially, I do suggest offering a varied diet for your geckos for optimum health, which is why I avoid the "baby food" route - baby foods only offer one fruit at a time, some with low calcium:phosphorous ratios, and they can get quite a lot more expensive than just blending your own!

If your gecko is jumpy or flighty you can use whats called the "hand walking" method. To do this you simply hold one hand out directly in front of the gecko and allow him to hop, walk, or jump to the extended hand, then you immediately place your free hand out in front again, and so on. Young geckos and newly acquired geckos typically need to be hand walked for several sessions before you can expect them to calm down.

If they start eating CGD on their own (no sweeteners, no hand feeding) you can introduce dusted crickets once a week as a treat. Just follow the directions on the label for how to mix CGD if you are also feeding insects.

There are some great ones that range from $20 – $60, but we use the Jennings CJ600, available at Amazon for around $40, and it’s been working for over 5 years now. There’s a cheaper option for $30: the My Weigh 7000. You can also look for them locally, any should work as long as it weighs in tenths (0.10) of a gram for greater accuracy, especially with juveniles.

Have the timer go between 5 and 15 seconds 2x a day. Keep an eye on the tank conditions and extend for longer if necessary. If you deep water the plants once a week, a shorter spray will suffice. You can do a weekly 20-30 second spray as an alternative. You just don’t want the tank to be too wet all the time. Let us know if you have any further questions!

If you have live plants in your vivarium additional light can be provided by a fluorescent bulb running the length of the tank. Crested geckos tend to rest in foliage or shelters during the day and are active at night. They do not require UVB light if fed a diet that contains Vitamin D3. Turn off lights at night.

The crested gecko, New Caledonian crested gecko, Guichenot's giant gecko or eyelash gecko, Correlophus ciliatus, is a species of gecko native to southern New Caledonia. This species was thought extinct until it was rediscovered in 1994.[2] Along with several Rhacodactylus species, it is being considered for protected status by the Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna. It is popular in the pet trade.

Newly hatched crested geckos will generally not eat until after they have shed and eaten their skin for the first time, relying on the remains of their yolk sack for nutrition.[4]

Crested geckos were once considered among the rarest lizards in captivity. Today crested geckos are bred in large numbers and have become standard in the pet industry.

In nature, crested geckos will usually lose their tails and end up with a tiny pointed tail nub. “Taillessness” is a normal condition for adults crested geckos. In captivity, hobbyists like their crested geckos with tails, but this requires keeping animals individually and pampered to prevent tail loss.

I got my eyelash crested gecko 17 months ago, his current weight is at 1wgrams. Should (s)he weigh more than this? (S)he is a great water. Only eats the powdered food, not insecystic. Thank you! Jamie

2. CRESTED GECKO DIET & INSECTS: Crested Geckos can be fed the Powdered Crested Gecko Foods along with crickets or other insects. Offer Pangea Fruit Mix Complete Diet 3-4 times per week and insects 2-3 times per week.

Both male and female crested geckos reach a moderate size of 4 to 4.5 inches snout-to-vent length (SVL), and 8 inches in total length. Crested geckos are sexually mature when 15 to 18 months of age, and at a weight of approximately 35 grams.

Hi Jenn! If you are housing the geckos together, there is a possibility they are fighting. Especially if one is smaller. Separating, if they are together now, is the best thing to do. Lost toes is likely due to shedding problems. Make sure you are providing drinking water in a bowl, are misting regularly, and letting the enclosure dry out between mistings. You want to avoid too wet or too dry conditions. Good luck!

About a month ago our family bought a beautiful juvenile crested gecko from you all named C.T. I have him/her on just the Repashy CGD. However, I would like to include different CGD’s and dubia roaches in the diet. What exact diet do you have your geckos on? Also, when will he be identifiable as male or female? He is roughly a year old. Thanks!

Crested geckos typically drink water droplets from the sides of their enclosure and from any plants or cage accessories. This is one of the reasons it is important to mist your geckos daily. It is also recommended that a small dish of clean water is present in the enclosure at all times.

14 days should be the shortest period of quarantine for a new gecko. One to three months is recommended before introduction to other geckos.

Crested Gecko

Sorry. For some reason, the data did not load properly.

Crested geckos are considered a good beginner reptile because they are relatively inexpensive and easy to care for. They are comfortable at room temperatures, can be housed in attractive terrariums or simple plastic tubs, and eat a commercial diet that costs less than $20 per year to feed a single gecko. Below you will find some basic information to help you get started!

A typical feeding schedule is offering a commercial (or supplemented homemade) diet every other night, and once a week you can offer dusted and gutloaded insects such as crickets or roaches. Fresh fruit treats or fatty insects such as waxworms can be fed once or twice a month, just make sure they are 10% or less of the total diet.

Hi can you tell me please what type of lighting starter unit is used. Is it the wet or dry unit? Thank you

Crested geckos like temperatures of 78 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit during the day. It can drop to the low 70s at night. In most areas this temperature range will be reached during the warm months of the year without additional heat. In summer, place crested geckos in a cool room if the temperature exceeds 87 degrees. During the winter crested geckos will tolerate night drops into the 60s.

These geckos are nocturnal so they do not require a nightlight, but it is recommended that they are exposed to light during the day to regulate their photoperiod. An indirect light is fine, such as a lamp or light from a window. Avoid direct sunlight on their enclosure as it can increase temperatures to dangerous levels. At night they can adjust even if it is completely dark. They may be more active at dawn and dusk.

Though the export of wild crested geckos is now prohibited, biologists exported several specimens for breeding and study before New Caledonia stopped issuing permits to export the species.[4] From these specimens, different breeding lines were established both in Europe and the United States.[4] The crested gecko is now one of the most widely kept and bred species of gecko in the world.[4]

It is much easier to maintain room humidity at 50% than to try to mist each enclosure throughout the day to maintain the humidity. Proper ventilation is essential to health, so be sure that your tubs also have adequate ventilation. This should not be a problem if you have a humidifier running in the same room(s) as your crested geckos.

The easiest way to provide heat is a low-wattage incandescent bulb or a ceramic heat emitter in a reflector type fixture placed on the screen top over one side of the tank so that the temperature of basking areas (branches) reaches the desired range. You must always keep one side of the tank unheated so that crested geckos can choose a cooler area to regulate their body temperature. You can also use a subtank reptile heat pad or heat tape under one side of the tank regulated by a thermostat.

(I note here that during the cooler winter months, my crested geckos tend to eat less due to lowered temperatures, and I will feed every third night instead of every second to avoid food waste. However, all geckos are still misted every night.) If you are still thinking of feeding your crested gecko a baby food diet, please visit Dragontown Reptiles and meet Bubba. This animal had to be rehabilitated and will never be 100% "normal" due to his past diet.

Hi I just got my crested gecko on Aug13, 2015. It’s been 5 days and no eating. When I first got him he did poo in the pet store container while bringing him home. Since being home he has not pooed or eating his prepared meals. He did shed and eat his skin 2 days ago. I have lighting, misting, and check temperatures constantly.
