On the Great Pond, information is again hard to find, but with fish to 30lb, they are worth fishing for.

Badshot Lea Small Pond (Easy) The smaller of the two lakes at the complex, it is an ideal starter venue with numerous fish up to mid-doubles with multiple catches common throughout the year. An ideal water to get a bend in the rod where all tactics will score at the right time and some fantastic floater fishing during the summer months.

Species and Origin: The common carp is a large omnivorous fish. They have large scales, a long dorsal fin base, and two pairs of long barbels (whiskers) in its upper jaw. Native to Europe and Asia, it was intentionally introduced into Midwest waters as a game fish in the 1880s. (Be aware of a native look-a-like: the native fish bigmouth buffalo looks like a carp without barbells)

Status: They are established in 48 states. They are distributed in hundreds of waters in the southern two-thirds, and a few waters in the northern third of Minnesota. See US map .

South Lake (Medium-Hard) The 7.5 acre lake is one where all fishing is done at less than 4m range, so bankside noise should be kept to an absolute minimum. With three small islands and a causeway into the lake, there are plenty of features to fish to and with a good head of both Commons and Mirrors, typically between 15 – 25lb, but up to 34lb.

Carp are various species of oily[1] freshwater fish from the family Cyprinidae, a very large group of fish native to Europe and Asia.

Common carp are believed to have been introduced into the Canadian province of British Columbia from Washington. They were first noted in the Okanagan Valley in 1912, as was their rapid growth in population. Carp are currently distributed in the lower Columbia (Arrow Lakes), lower Kootenay, Kettle (Christina Lake), and throughout the Okanagan system.[25]

Carp between 4lb to 15lb Use carp rods with a 1.5 – 1.75lb TC (test curve); fixed spool reels loaded with 100m+ of 10lb mainline. Legering offers a vast assortment of terminal tackle rigs, but use simple bolt rigs when starting and keep things simple to reduce tangles and maintain straightforward bait presentation.

Warren Pond is a very silty lake with some very old fish, where rig choice is very important, light leads and long hooklinks with pop-ups and critically balanced hook baits are a must to combat the deep silt.

KHV affects all strains of Carp, but not Grass Carp, Crucian Carp or Tench, although like Wels Catfish, they can carry the virus.

By gulping air at the surface, the carp is able to tolerate periods when oxygen levels in the water fall (2). In winter, individuals go into deeper waters which tends to be somewhat warmer than shallow water (2).

Lodge Pond (Easy-Medium) Another one of our waters with a good head of fish that produces a few 30lb fish every year, with the average size being in the mid to upper double range: the margins can be very productive here with small beds of particle and single hook baits worth a go.

Carp, along with many of their cyprinid relatives, are popular ornamental aquarium and pond fish.

As with most Herpes type virus, it is believed the virus stays with the fish throughout its life, with fish showing absolutely no signs of the disease still considered as carriers.

Distribution Countries | FAO areas | Ecosystems | Occurrences | Point map | Introductions | Faunafri Europe to Asia: Black, Caspian and Aral Sea basins. Introduced throughout the world. Wild stocks are only present naturally in rivers draining to the Black, Caspian and Aral Sea (Ref. 59043). A reophilic wild population in the Danube is assumed to be the origin of the European species; this population is now under threat (Ref. 13696).

Like other Cyprinids, common carp have been observed to be exceptional at leaping out of the water when threatened by predators, or frightened by passing watercraft.

The Romans farmed carp and this pond culture continued through the monasteries of Europe and to this day. In China, Korea and Japan, carp farming took place as early as the Yayoi Period (c. 300 BC – 300 AD).[28]

In Victoria, Australia, common carp has been declared as noxious fish species, the quantity a fisher can take is unlimited.[20] In South Australia, it is an offence for this species to be released back to the wild.[21] An Australian company produces plant fertilizer from carp.[22]

Common carp have been introduced to most continents and some 59 countries. In absence of natural predators or commercial fishing they may extensively alter their environments due to their reproductive rate and their feeding habit of grubbing through bottom sediments for food. In feeding, they may destroy, uproot, disturb and eat submerged vegetation, causing serious damage to native duck, such as canvasbacks, and fish populations.[19]

There original Carp are all fully scaled fish, having 35 to 40 scales along their lateral line with all the scales covering the fish being large and well defined, and are known as Common Carp. There are several variants of Common Carp (Cyprinus carpio):

Where to look: They live in lakes, rivers, and wetlands and are often seen in spring when they spawn in shallow waters.

Burton Bradstock fish were stocked into Frensham Little Pond in October 1985, fish from the same consignment were stocked on the same day into Badshot Lea Big Pond, subsequently however the unfortunate consequence was that a great many of the older carp in both fisheries were then lost to a virus (thought to be SVC), soon after.
