There is an interesting National Trust Property there, "Mr Straws House" an ordinary persons house, but frozen in time, bit different from all the Stately Homes and Parks in The Dukeries

I woukd suggest considering Lincoln which is about 20 miles east of retford, Lincoln is a lovely little city with some great places to see including the cathedral and castle, both have station, but cant remember what lines they are on.

As already stated, Hardwick stands at the head of Clumber Lake, which from this point, its best view, presents a. very fine expanse of water, with well-wooded margins. These different objects, with the house seen in the distance, form altogether a very pleasing landscape.

Thank you for the input. I do wish to visit Lincoln - I am very interested in cathedral towns and have already been to York, Salisbury, Chester and Winchester. I can spend hours in a cathedral, so Lincoln needs a whole day dedicated to it, at least.
