Initially, a partial evacuation of the stadium was put in place but a decision was made between police and Manchester United club officials to abandon the game and a full controlled evacuation of the stadium was undertaken.

A further statement read: "Any supporters who would have accessed the stadium with their Season Card or Membership Card on Sunday will be able to do so again, and supporters with paper tickets can use them again too, all free of charge. 

"I would also like to thank all those involved in the operation today for such a professional response, which includes police officers, stewards, MUFC staff, media representatives and commentators and the Bomb Disposal Team."

"We would like to thank Manchester United's staff, the police and other emergency services for all their efforts today as well as rearranging the match for this coming Tuesday.

Shortly before the final league game of the season was due to kick-off at 3pm, ground staff alerted police to a suspicious item that had been found in the toilets within the North West quadrant, between the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand and the Stretford End.

A Premier League statement read: "We can confirm that today's abandoned fixture between Manchester United and AFC Bournemouth will be played on Tuesday 17 May at 8:00pm.

The Bournemouth squad is understood to have flown back to the south coast on Sunday, unaware the game would be rescheduled so quickly, and will fly back on Tuesday morning.

According to Greater Manchester Police, the device had accidentally been left by a private company following a training exercise involving explosive sniffer dogs held last Wednesday.

"Whilst this item did not turn out to be a viable explosive, on appearance this device was as real as could be, and the decision to evacuate the stadium was the right thing to do, until we could be sure that people were not at risk. "Everyone remained calm, followed instructions, and worked with officers and stewards to ensure that a safe evacuation was quickly completed. Those present today were a credit to the football family and their actions should be recognised.

"Replacement paper tickets can be issued and can be reprinted at Ticketing & Membership Services on Monday or Tuesday. Fans who come to the stadium to do this on Tuesday are advised to arrive early please to avoid queues."

United confirmed just before midnight on Sunday that match tickets will be refunded and free entry given to the rearranged game.

The Old Trafford clash will be shown live on Sky Sports 1 HD from 7.30pm.

Bomb disposal experts then carried out a controlled explosion on a suspect package just after 4.30pm.

"I'd like to thank the support from the police which was first class and the impeccable response from fans of both teams.

The issue of a re-arranged date for the fixture was further complicated by Manchester United's involvement in the FA Cup final against Crystal Palace next Saturday, May 21.
