At its meeting on 23 March 2014, the Board of the Football League decided unanimously that Cellino's conviction by an Italian Court meant that he did not meet their Owners and Director's Test, so could not take over Leeds United. Leeds is also home to Phoenix Dance Theatre, who were formed in the Harehills area of the city in 1981, and Northern Ballet Theatre.[167] In autumn 2010 the two companies moved into a purpose-built dance centre which is the largest space for dance outside London. It is also the only space for dance to house a national classical and a national contemporary dance company alongside each another.[168]

Leeds has a well established gay nightlife scene. The Bridge Inn and The New Penny, both on Call Lane, have long been gay night spots.[180]

Farsley Celtic announced in July 2007 that they were considering changing their name to FC Leeds or Leeds Celtic because Farsley is not well known and so their fanbase is small, a change that could be in place by the 2008–09 season.[3]

Leeds United Ladies play in the FA Women's Premier League National Division having previously been promoted from the FA Women's Premier League Northern Division in 2001. They are one of two Yorkshire teams in the national league, along with Doncaster Rovers Belles LFC. Leeds Ladies finished 7th in the league last season (2005–06).
