Bayern Munich begin the defence of their trophy at Carl Zeiss Jena on Friday August 19. Borussia Dortmund travel to fourth division outsiders Eintracht Trier on Monday August 22.

Mark Zimmermann's side finished seventh in their division last season, and should play to a packed house of 18,500 on Friday.

Now Jena have invited the Welsh to play them in Germany to help mark their 110th anniversary and rekindle the friendship between the clubs.

The club's link with Jena was forged when the teams met in the Cup Winners' Cup in 1981.

The team also won the Thuringia Cup in 1993. The latter allowed the club qualification to the 1993–94 DFB-Pokal where it lost 2–0 to Bayern Munich.

"Going to Carl Zeiss Jena will bring back so many memories," said County director of football Tim Harries.

Newport earned a 2-2 draw in the first leg in Jena in 1981, but a 1-0 defeat at Somerton Park in the second leg saw the German team advance to the semi final.

"I was in Jena in 1980, it wasn't good," the Italian told reporters at a press conference in Munich on Thursday. "The defeat is unforgettable. There are defeats in a career which linger and when I hear 'Jena' I remember everything. I'm looking forward to going back there after 36 years."

"This is quite a special game for us and for our fans. It is something very emotional."

In 1933, 1. SV Jena joined the Gauliga Mitte, one of 16 top-flight divisions formed in the reorganization of German football under the Third Reich. The team captured division titles in 1935, 1936, 1940, and 1941. This earned Jena entry to the national finals, but they performed poorly and were never able to advance out of preliminary-round group play. After the 1943–44 season, the Gauliga Mitte broke up into a collection of city-based leagues as World War II overtook the area.

Another notable player is former Germany goalkeeper Robert Enke, who started his career at the club and then went on to play for clubs such as Hannover 96, FC Barcelona and S.L. Benfica.

The clubs last met in the quarter final of the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1981 when Jena won 3-2 on aggregate.

Newport return to the Football League after a 25-year absence next season after winning the Conference play-off.
