Despite the renewed disappointment of another season treading water in the Regionalliga, the club did make one important step on their path to success. That summer Hopp appointed Ralf Rangnick as head coach. As ex-manager of VfB Stuttgart, Hannover 96 and most recently Schalke 04, where he had fought toe-to-toe with Bayern Munich for the title, Rangnick was a real coup for Hoffenheim and showed intent on Hopp’s behalf. The upstarts from rural Baden-Württemberg could no longer be ignored.
Whereas many clubs in Hoffenheim’s position would have appointed another firefighter manager with the simple remit of avoiding relegation at all costs, the club from rural Baden-Württemberg have put their trust in youth and long-termism and have taken a very bold step towards the future, regardless of what the next six months bring.

In its 2013–14 season, Hoffenheim surprised the league by playing offensive football, scoring 72 goals yet conceding 70 goals. These values placed Hoffenheim as the third-best offensive team and the second-worst defensive team in the league. The club finished ninth, avoiding any troubles regarding relegation as in the season before.
Negotiations to merge TSG Hoffenheim, Astoria Walldorf, and SV Sandhausen to create FC Heidelberg 06 in 2005 were abandoned due to the resistance of the latter two clubs, and the failure to agree on whether the new side's stadium should be located in Heidelberg or Eppelheim. Team owner Hopp clearly preferred Heidelberg, but could not overcome the resistance of local firm Wild, which had already reserved the site of the planned stadium for its new production facilities.

With the rise of the first team, the club's reserve side, TSG 1899 Hoffenheim II, started to climb through the ranks, too. It entered the Verbandsliga Baden in 2001 and won promotion to the Oberliga Baden-Württemberg in its second season there. After seven seasons in the Oberliga, the team won promotion to the Regionalliga Süd after a league title in 2010. With the disbanding of the Regionalliga Süd in 2012, Hoffenheim II became part of the new Regionalliga Südwest.
Andrej Kramaric headed Hoffenheim back on terms in the 17th minute and the hosts took a deserved lead through Lukas Rupp five minutes before half-time, after Nabil Betaleb gave away possession cheaply in midfield.
Mario Gomez drew another blank in his second game for Wolfsburg as Hoffenheim frustrated Dieter Hecking's men to pick up a point from a 0-0 draw at the Rhein-Neckar Arena.

The Bundesliga welcomes its 55th new member this weekend with Leipzig at the top table for the first time, although the Easterners are not lacking Bundesliga experience in their ranks. Timo Werner has joined from VfB Stuttgart, which was also the formative club of Rani Khedira. The Swabian connection also links Leipzig's sporting director Ralf Rangnick, who led the club to promotion as head coach last season before appointing Ralph Hasenhüttl as his replacement.
Despite the lack of goals, it was anything but a dull affair with both teams attacking and creating chances.
As for the club, it remains to be seen to what extent Hopp’s dream will be realised. But one thing is for sure: the appointment of Nagelsmann has the potential to lay the foundations for the tradition he and the club have craved.

On the pitch, Rangnick and Hoffenheim had no intention of spending as long in the 2. Bundesliga as they did trying to get into it. Rangnick quickly added quality with players such as Demba Ba, Carlos Eduardo and Chinedu Obasi as the team spent more than the rest of the league put together. No surprise then that in the 2007-08 season Hoffenheim were promoted to the Bundesliga at the first attempt, only 18 years after playing amateur football in the ninth tier.
Unbeknown to Rangnick, Hopp had been negotiating the midfielder’s transfer with Bayern for some time. Rangnick’s ambition with Hoffenheim was not just to be a Bundesliga club, but to compete on the European stage. And, even though Hopp shared the vision, he couldn’t shake off his business background and saw the sense the deal made financially.

The modern-day club was formed in 1945, when gymnastics club Turnverein Hoffenheim (founded 1 July 1899) and football club Fußballverein Hoffenheim (founded 1921) merged. Hoffenheim signed former FC St. Pauli manager Holger Stanislawski in the summer of 2011 for the upcoming season. After a promising start to its 2011–12 campaign, the team's performance deteriorated, losing most matches away from home and eventually even losing the quarter-final of the 2011–12 DFB-Pokal to second division club SpVgg Greuther Fürth at home. Stanislawski was sacked and replaced by Markus Babbel, who led the team to its third-straight 11th-place finish.
All it lacked was goals, with Gomez as guilty as any of missing chances, although Julian Draxler had arguably Wolfsburg's best opportunities.

Plenty of parallels have been drawn between Leipzig's rise to the top league and Hoffenheim's own ascent, which culminated in promotion to the Bundesliga in 2008. They have yet to crown their stay in the top flight with European qualification and many are asking whether this might be the season, with the youngest coach in the league Julian Nagelsmann now many months the wiser coming into the new campaign.
