Fjölnir surpriseThe opening round was certainly a treat for local fans with the first six games producing 23 goals. Four came in FH's 4-0 win at HK Kópavogs and eight more were scored as reigning champions, and pre-season favourites, Valur Reykjavík lost 5-3 at Keflavík. Promoted Fjölnir also won 3-0 at Throttúr Reykjavík, and now top the table having won all three of their opening league fixtures.

Another winCoach Ásmundur Arnarsson remained cautious after that victory, saying: "We believe that when play well we can beat any team, but we cannot get carried away. There are 20 games to go and we can't celebrate now. Many things can happen in the next week and we have to keep our feet on the ground." As it happened, their next fixture brought another win – 1-0 at Grindavík.

The Icelandic season kicked off with a hail of goals on 10 May but with Fjölnir top, only FH Hafnarfjördur are living up to their pre-campaign billing.

Hat-trick heroValur followed their opening-day defeat with a 3-0 win against Grindavík, thanks to a Pálmi Rafn Pálmason hat-trick. "It is remarkable how much more fun it is to score three goals rather than two but I got a lot help," he said. However, the celebrations were not to last for long, and a 2-0 defeat at Fylkir in their most recent game was a worrying result.

FH secondThat victory has left Fjölnir top of the table, through Fram Reykjavík can overtake them with a win tonight. Cup holders FH are second after following their opening win against HK with a 2-0 triumph against ÍA Akranes and a 4-4 draw at Thróttur. Tipped to finish second in the table, they have at least lived up to expectations, unlike Valur and KR.

KR defeatedTipped to finish third, KR are level on points with Valur ahead of their meeting with Breidablik tonight. A 3-1 win in their opener against Grindavík – promoted to the top division as second-flight champions – marked a good start, but Fjölnir were to send an early shot over their bows in their next game.

Attacking styleCup finalists last season, Fjölnir followed their win at Throttúr with a 2-1 triumph against KR Reykjavík, with striker Gunnar Már Guðmundsson scoring a late winner from the penalty spot. "We do not know how to do anything but attack and score," he explained. "It has been our style over the years and there is no reason to change it."
