Garrard got in touch with the forward through a mutual friend and invited him down for two training sessions, before he appeared in the match against the Royals.

There is the Three Lions Bar at the ground, however this is for home fans only. Otherwise the ground is only a 5-10 minute walk from the town centre where there are plenty of pubs to be found, including a Wetherspoons outlet called the Hart and Spool, on Shenley Road.

Allinson, a hero of mine after his exploits in the 1987 League Cup semi-final at White Hart Lane, had stepped down. The man who had led Boreham Wood to two promotions resigned, feeling unable to juggle his responsibilities of his day job at Carlsberg with the new training timetable at the club. It was genuinely shocking to see the news and I told my son that there may be trouble ahead. I should have known better.

There are seven UEFA and FA licensed coaches at the club and a full-time medical department who deal with player injuries and rehabilitation.

At Boro, he carried on finding the back of the net regularly and Everton broke their transfer record to bring him to Goodison Park for £11.25million.

"I spoke to him on Sunday and he was very open in terms of a few bits that are going on but I've heard a little rumour someone in the League has put an offer to him so it will be very interesting to see how that pans out."

Away fans are mostly housed in the South Terrace at one end of the ground. In addition half the new West Stand (towards the South Terrace) is also allocated to visiting supporters and around 600 fans can be seated in this area. The relatively new West Stand enjoys good views of the playing action and the spectator facilities are good too. Normally a relaxed and enjoyable day out, although with generally small attendances the atmosphere within the stadium can be lacking.

My hopes were not high but then I listened to an interview with Hunter after the Southport match and my spirits were raised. Something told me that night that the Wood would not go quietly, that they would be given their just rewards for their hard work.

Former Nigerian international Yakubu, 33, enjoyed a distinguished career in the Premier League — turning out for Portsmouth, Middlesbrough, Everton and Blackburn.

OMG. Yakubu playing for Boreham Wood https://t.co/9Et1VKrkbx

The nearest railway station is Elstree & Boreham Wood which is located just under one mile away from Meadow Park. The station is served by trains from London St Pancras and Luton.

The first match was ideal. A trip to Boreham Wood’s Meadow Park to see the play-off final against Whitehawk. Me, my dad and my son ventured into slightly unknown territory on that sunny day but, as soon as we made our way through the turnstile, I knew this was a place where I felt comfortable. A cup of chips and a bottle of pop for my son, the Wood Army in full voice and a nail-biting 2-1 win in extra-time ensured that it was a cracking day.

Getting away from the ground is easy. It is a 5 minute drive through town before getting onto the A1 and another 10 minutes after that to the M25.

After being relegated in 1999–2000 they won Division One at the first attempt to make an immediate return to the Premier Division.[5] However, they were relegated again at the end of the 2002–03 season, although the season did see them reach the FA Cup first round again, where they lost 5–0 at Torquay United. After one season in Division One North (and another FA Cup first round appearance, a 4–0 defeat at Blackpool), they were transferred to Division One East of the Southern League.[5]

Straight out to the car park, and back on the A1 within five minutes. Back in Grimsby at 8.15pm.

"He's like a Rolls Royce, especially at this level. When he lands on the ball he's phenomenal," said Garrard.

A comical own goal and then a superb one-two between Howell and White saw the former give the Wood a 2-0 advantage at the interval, and Kamdjo’s header in the second half sealed the deal. There was even time for a conga to break out as the seconds ticked by. The Wood were staying up, and now everybody would believe us.

Boreham Wood Football Club is a football club based in Borehamwood, Hertfordshire, England. They are currently members of the National League and play at Meadow Park. Established in 1948, they are known as "the Wood" and have a local rivalry with St Albans City.

The club was established in 1948 as a merger of Boreham Rovers and Royal Retournez, and began playing in the Mid-Herts League.[2] In 1951 they joined the Parthenon League, and finished as runners-up in 1953–54 and 1954–55 before winning the title in 1955–56.[3] After finishing as runners-up again in 1956–57,[3] they joined the Spartan League.[4] They finished as runners-up in 1963–64 and again in 1965–66,[4] after which they switched to Division Two of the Athenian League.[5]

Boreham Wood defied the odds to earn promotion to the National League last season and they surpassed themselves again this year by staying in the division

Another ground to tick off and to complete the Watford triangle (Watford, Barnet and Boreham Wood) as they all involve lengthy journeys on the M25 for me.

To date we have 10 players in California, Washington D.C., Texas, Connecticut, with another 55 students in UK universities.

Courses range from 1 to 3 years, and there are three education sites, including study facilities on site at BWFC.

There is a car park at the ground, but this is only for players and Club officials. A few minutes walk from Meadow Park is the Brook Road 'pay and display' car park, which costs £2 for three hours, £3 for four hours and £5 for over four hours. The car park is free after 6.30pm and on Sundays. Please be aware that in the streets around the stadium a residents only parking scheme is in operation, so please check lamp posts for warning signs of this before parking up.

"It's a long shot (signing him for Boreham Wood).

Why were you looking forward to visiting the Meadow Park football ground?

"Is he as sharp as he used to be in the Premier League? No, but at 33 he could definitely do a job in the League."

Throughout it all we became more and more absorbed in the fate of Boreham Wood. What an emotional ride. The team went four unbeaten at the turn of the year but then lost at home to Kidderminster. A point at Grimsby and a home win over Braintree was followed by a defeat at home against Torquay. A brilliant win at Southport was undone with a poor home performance against Barrow.

Yakubu famously missed an open goal from inside the six-yard box against South Korea at the 2010 World Cup.

After an impressive first season, he soon went downhill and was sent on loan to Leicester before joining Blackburn.
