What is the new government-backed business bank? And how will it help start-ups and small businesses?

My father and I started a small business 5 years ago, we have worked really hard to slowly build it up. We now have nine people working for use and everything invested in it. One of the people we employ is a sales person, we took him on two and a bit years ago. Two months ago he came into work as a woman, insisting he was a transgender. Our business have suffered greatly, we suddenly loosing orders and customers. Anyone with any advice.

Hi All, I recently wrote an article "Can't any web developer provide affordable small business websites?". My position is: We don't think so. In our opinion every web developer has a specific skill set, optimised for the creation of websites they specialise in, obviously some larger web development companies will employ staff with a ranging skill sets, but with larger overheads, it can be hard for them to provide affordable web solutions to small businesses.Click to expand... This is purely a discussion point, so please keep it polite. There is more to the article, but it is a bit self promotional, so I have left it out, <edit by mod> I look forward to the polite comments (on the question/quote above). Thanks

Hi, My name's Steve Mustarde, I'm a tech entrepreneur with a background of > 10 years writing marketing strategies for some of the world's most famous brands. I've recently developed an online tool to help small businesses and sole traders use referral marketing (where your existing customers recommend you to their friends) to win new customers. Why? Because, done properly, referral marketing is the most effective, most trackable and most economical marketing channel available to small businesses. Plus you don't require any 'budget' to invest upfront so it really is the only zero risk option there is. I'm looking for a number of businesses to use the service for free, sending me feedback whenever they think an aspect of it could be bettered, helping me improve it over time. It should win you some new customers and will make promoting your business easy and rewarding for both you and your customers. NB: This is not an effort to dupe anyone into a free trial that quickly turns into something paid. I am genuinely hoping to build a community of users who can help me make this product amazing. I do not intend to charge a penny to users for the foreseeable future. If you are interested in getting involved please get in touch and I'll gladly take you through it all. Regards, Steve

Hi, Just started up in Preston but covering the whole country offering free marketing advice and low cost marketing services to small businesses. For too long, large agencies have been making money off of small businesses and I'm hoping to change that. I offer marketing, promotion, PR, digital, social media and print services all with a clear rationale - I make sure clients understand why they are doing activity and how it is helping their business. I also aim to provide the cheapest print around whether that's leaflets, postcards, booklets, banners or promotional items. I hope to help UKBF members soon. Cheers, Wayne

The majority of the British public believes that policy to promote ethical practices among big businesses should be prioritised by the next government, and is calling for the next government to commit to penalising corporates that act unfairly towards small businesses, a new poll shows.

We understand what it takes to promote these business online and how to help them moving forward. By actually building and managing websites for its customers, SoleTrader.com instantly removes the hassle, time and confusion of a self-build platform (1&1, Go Daddy, Wix) or the expense of a high street web developer.

As a small business we only offer statutory sick pay. I'm aware that if an employee comes into work and later goes home sick this cannot count as a sick day. What isn't clear is what are the pay obligations. Do we have to pay for the full day, or do we just pay for the hours worked, what is reasonable? Thanks

hey all, I'm looking to set up a small business to challenge myself and develop some marketing skills. I'm looking at setting up a simple Shopify store and linking in with a dropshipper based in the US. My target customer is also going to be in the US and products are going to retail around $10-15 So my query is what do I need to consider? I'm looking at the tax consequences in relation to sales tax and I'm hoping Shopify will have something built in I can use to charge correctly. But is there anything else I need to research? Thanks

Late payments and cashflow are the scourge of small business owners the world over, inhibiting growth and threatening their very future. While working on a ‘credit score subscription service’ for Barclays, Martin Campbell, Robert Drury, Stuart Dawson and Eamon O’Dwyer saw the potential for their product to combat these cashflow problems.

I and a friend are currently working on starting a small business selling adult goods (sex toys, and such, no pornographic material), beginning by marketing towards the local student community (being students ourselves). We plan to set up an online store, so that selling between campuses and another local university is as simple as possible, however our main problem we've found is finding a good payment processor. Google Checkout and Paypal both have policies against adult goods, which is a shame, and the only processor with a good reputation we've found so far is Worldpay, who want a £200 setup fee and £30 a month to handle payments: Since our potential sales figures are by no means guaranteed yet (we've generally been met with positive reactions to the store from people we've talked to, but are well aware that due to the personal nature of the products we will be selling, this is unlikely to reflect our customer base), we don't believe that this is a wise investment at this point. Can anybody recommend a good payment processor that has no issues with the sale of adult goods? Cheers,

Hi, I run a small business from home which is 99% mail-order. I have a pub/hotel next door which is having some renovation work done. During this process one of their contractors managed to bring my telephone line down. It took Openreach 16 days to send a team out with cherry picker to put line back up. During this time I had no phone or internet, so therefore no business at all. I think I have reasonable grounds to sue for loss of earnings, do I approach the Hotel owners as they employed the contractor or do I need to chase the contractor myself? Any advice I'm grateful... Thanks

Useful, but missing 2 important points I think. Firstly look in to schemes supported by organisations like The Federation of Small Businesses, or the British Shops and Stores Association. Their deals can be much much better than anything offered initially by a merchant. Secondly, although you do not need to bank with the aquirer it can help. It can give you more leverage to negotiate, your bank manager can better argue your case when there are problems, you can get your money quicker. The last is especially nice. If a customer pays by card today, the money is in my bank tomorrow.

So there we have it, the Chancellor’s third Autumn Statement. But we could easily describe it as something of a mini-Budget to be honest: fuel duty scrapped, personal allowances increased, new schools building programme announced, an extension to Small Business Rate Relief, and even a cut in corporation tax unveiled.

Many small businesses are still relying on antiquated phone systems, designed for a pre-digital age that don’t meet the needs of today’s companies or consumers. These fixed office systems can lack the ability to support your growth ambitions, and at worst can be damaging and costly.

Hi all, We have our own recycling business and have just opened up our own waste transfer station, lot of blood sweat and tears have gone into our business but we are getting there slowly. Our biggest issue is finding different companies to recycle certain wastes to avoid it going to land fill. I have contacted numerous companies around the north east with regards to PVC recycling but as we are a relatively small business at present the big companies are not interested as we don't produce enough. Slightly frustrating as surely these people must have started at the bottom like the rest of us. Just a query to see if any one knows any independent PVC or Glass recyclers in the North East

I do have a jaded view of marketers. I have a marketing background, did the CIM stuff as well that was my employed career. Now, I just see so many small businesses where they have paid to be 80/20'ed, maslowed, segmented, strategized, etc,etc but have nothing tangible to show for it. All analysis, no actions, no results. I think as a small business when you have a limited budget - you are better taking a punt on action because all marketing is gambling. You can speak to other small businesses and research from your desk, using forums like this to focus your efforts and lessen risk. And whilst I agree with the premise "If the use of a consultant is costing you money, you're using the wrong consultant." , how do you choose the right one. Even the bad ones can show great track records.
