Hello - had a quick look at your website and like the concept. I would say though if you can't raise a £1000 between you to fund your business you are going to struggle. If you are going to pitch for investment from local investors in Norfolk do make sure you have a strong business and marketing plan in place and be very clear about what the investment will be used for and what specific skills you are looking for. Perhaps speak to your local chamber of commerce/business team at your local council for advice. Good luck.

Hi Alex, You are welcome to UKBF. This is also a great place to network with other business owners online and learn from one another. For networking in person, you might consider joining some local networking groups in your area including your local chamber of commerce in London. Hope this helps? Reach out if you need more information.

Hello UKBF. Wigan Borough Business Club (WBBC) starts back next week after the summer break. WBBC is a totally free networking and business support group that meets once a month in the Wigan Borough. WBBC is run by local businesses for local businesses. We are a not-for-profit organisation that has been running for donkeys years! You don't have to join, or pay anything, it's totally without obligation. Just bring plenty business cards! We start the meeting off with refreshments/buffet and informal networking then we have an educational presentation from a local business or organisation. The meetings are usually on the first Tuesday of the month and are hosted at various locations around the borough. Next week’s meeting is at Yorkshire Bank in Wigan Town Centre, and takes place between 6:30 and 8:30-9ish. It helps if you can book in advance. Bookings are taken through the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce website (which help support our group). For details and how to book please visit the WBBC website. Just Google 'Wigan Borough Business Club' Also please see our Linked In Group. Just search for Wigan Borough Business Club under 'groups'. Next week’s presentation is entitled 'Marketing on a shoestring' and is presented by the excellent Andrew Greenyer. Hope to see you there! If you have any questions just shout... Thanks, Paul.

I do the Cambs Chamber of Commerce and they are great for me - always hit sales amounts that have at least doubled exhibitor fee from the event and then more in the future. Really good for brand awareness, networking and business card collecting too.

Hello everyone I have my first meeting at my local Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday - it is for new members so not too scary but I was wondering what I should expect? Will I be asked to give a 1 minute speech about my business or is it more likely to be general chat over coffee? To say I'm nervous is an understatement but I'll be glad to get the first one under my belt as I will be going to more. Does anyone else belong to the Kingston (upon Thames) Chamber? Thanks for your time.

Hi, I'm a member of the Cambridgeshire Chamber of Commerce, Huntingdon chapter in particular (as I live in Buckden). Is anyone else a member? Anyone going to the networking events every second Tuesday and Thursday (Huntingdon and Cambridge)?

Speak to you local chamber of commerce or commercial estate agents they should be able to make recommendations. I don't think you ask for more than the property value so would need to look at funding start up costs separately or putting a lower deposit down so you have money leftover. Don't forget to protect the residential premises as a separate premises, so that if they business fails you have assets left.

I am interested to know if there are any networking groups going on in Lincs? I have though about attending my local Chamber of commerce a few times but never see to have the time..........

Not too much - about £150 for us (6m x 2m). The bigger cost is the transport to and from and the lost opportunity by being unproductive. I would have said more than 50% of vistor's were selling their own wares. My feeling is that the Chamber of Commerce is wrapped up in 'networking' and sees the exhibition as another networking venue. A small charge of £5 entry per visitor (include free tea and cake or something) would put off the time-wasters. Much rather have 10 quality visitors than 100 freeloaders. G

2017 resolution - grow the business (more). Aren't we all! I run a small business called Virtual VIP. We have a good number of clients and positive feedback on our service. This year I really want to focus on growing and developing our customer base and was looking for any insight from the forum on more creative ways this could be done. Here's what we have tried so far... SEO/ Paid Search Had an agency run some SEO and paid search for us. The market is fairly competitive with 2/3 big players (paying funny money per click!). Networking Member of local chamber of commerce / local networking groups. Also at the UKBF- The Pitch! Email marketing Our SEO agency also helped with some creative email campaigns. We tried something a little different and did get a few bites. Would be good to hear further views on email marketing and how to get good lead data. Telemarketing Dabbled a little with a freelance telemarketer who did help us bring a few clients on board, but was at a fairly high cost per customer. All pretty much 'the usual'. Keen to hear fellow business owners views of different ways they have grown their business. Or any views or thoughts on what we have done so far. Thanks in advance for any insight Keen to get a good discussion on the go. Steven

Well, I'm old enough to remember doing business in Europe before we joined the EEC/EU. Firstly there was all that pain of needing to get Carnets from the London Chamber of Commerce. You still do for Norway and Switzerland so I assume that if we took the 'Norway' option we would need Carnets for temporary importation of equipment and sales materials for every single European country, even Scotland. Secondly, there were always hassles about getting paid. One client even paid for my wife to fly to Barcelona for the day to pick up my fee in cash. My bank was quite surprised when I walked in with a big bundle of Pesetas. I also had problems with payment from Switzerland who seem to have a similar set of rules for BtoB transactions as we have for BtoC.

Hi Lee I have implemented additional elements on to our websites recently (online chat, forums etc) to try to "engage" visitors, as I have been reading in this forum quite recently that these (especially online chat can be, when done right, quite successful. I am waiting to see how this goes first. Prior to that I had been involved in local Twitter hours where we used to be based, but where we are now there isn't anything so have joined the local Chamber of Commerce, and they were really impressed. xTuple is a brilliant piece of software. It's the world's number 1 open source ERP solution. Covers so many aspects of the day to day running of your business you could imagine, and is even FREE for companies up to four users. It may well be a huge system for a small business if you think about it, but at least it is one sure way of being as future-proof as you can.

I’m interested if anyone is a member of their local chamber of commerce and whether you think it is beneficial? I’ve been considering joining a local networking group for a while, but am not sure which one will best suit me (and let’s be honest I’m a bit scared), and think CoC may fit the bill. As a consumer retail business I’m not looking for B2B type referrals, which a lot of networking groups seem to be more aimed at (although I may be wrong?). As well as gaining / contributing towards a general support network, I really want the opportunity to get involved in joint promotional activities and network with the local media. Reading the list of members at my local Chamber of Commerce (Cheltenham) I think it could be a beneficial group to be involved in, but I’d love to hear from someone with experience of their local chamber. Thanks in anticipation

This area is a bit of a black hole when it comes to chambers of commerce and business clubs. The South Wales Chamber of Commerce is not really interested in doing practical things especially outside of Cardiff, Newport or Swansea. The local council supported RCT business club seems to be all about Gala Nights, Awards and a bit of networking. So I'm trying to get a few people together to form an association that will promote practical measures for the towns up here. Joint promotional events, joint campaigns, joint marketing etc. Once it is up and running it will be 100% member driven i.e. they will control how it makes its decisions and how it funds its self At this stage it is very early stages so I'm just looking for a handful of people to help get it from an idea and in to a real world thing. So far I have 3 volunteers, one of which used to work within the Chamber and Business Club but left due to feeling let down by them. If you are interested please let me know Thanks

Hi all, we are on the lookout to do some networking with online retailers in the South Yorkshire area; can anyone recommend any meet-ups or similar? We have registered with the Sheffield Chamber of Commerce but don't have any other ideas. Thanks, Simon

I attend my first chamber of commerce breakfast today. Whilst I had no problem presenting to senior management for 30 minutes in my previous employed role I did find this a little daunting. It's the fact most people were already in conversation and I didn't want to interrupt. What did throw me was that I had to give a 2 minute pitch (which I was not aware of) in front of 40 strangers and I was last ! I don't remember what I said.......anyway at least I now know what to expect.

I have a small B2C service business that I have been running for around two years. I'm looking to greatly expand my marketing, but I don't want to outsource everything to an agency - I probably can't afford it and I also want to do a lot of the work myself. Really I want a mentor that I can talk through my plans with and then meet regularly to see if everything is on track. Does such a thing exist? In another life I received help from a local chamber of commerce, but the guy I met with treated me like a moron and seemed to have a one size fits all approach. I'm based in York and would probably like someone based in the Yorkshire region. Any ideas?

Hello, everyone. I have a plan to start a little Cafe - Bar in Bristol. Need to do some market research (never did it before by myself - want to try). So I would like to know: 1) Do you know, what would be the best source(s) to get info about Cafe - Bars in Bristol (UK)? 2) Can you recommend any organisations who can help me (like gov.co.uk or chamber of commerce) to direct me where to find information, data and statistics? * Please do not advertise any research companies I can google it. 3) I heard about libraries. How does it works do I just go there and ask: " Hello! Do you have any research data?" Or... ??? 4) If I'll hire someone to do it for me (freelancer). What is an average cost for the job like this? Thank you for your help! See you soon again...

I like this strategy - test the waters by visiting some shows, see how many visitors are attending, get ideas for stalls, and decide whether you want to make sales at the show, or build your marketing database by taking contact details from visitors passing by. I'm exhibiting at Olympia in November as a result of research earlier this year, but I've also had success exhibiting at some local Chamber of Commerce events.
